Crash Sensing

Hamlin mechanical Crash sensors are a well proven method of frontal impact detection, a feature of occupancy protection systems for more than 15 years.  Hamlin’s patented sensor design has been an essential component in the restraint systems of many of the world’s leading manufacturers for many years.  Since launch Hamlin has supplied in excess of 250 million sensors for airbag and seatbelt pretensioner applications with a fault-free record of performance under accident conditions.

Emissions Control

Emissions control systems rely heavily on valves and actuators that balance the mixture of gasses used in the combustion process, to optimize fuel burn, maximizing the power output for a given volume of fuel, and minimizing the level of pollutants harmful to the environment.  Hamlin supplies sensors as standalone product or in a form can that be integrated in to the valve or actuator assembly.

Fluid Level Sensing

Hamlin sensing technologies are commonly used in engine compartment applications where they are used to monitor the level of vital fluids such as, brake fluid, coolant and screenwash.  Hamlin level sensors are now being used to measure the level of urea as part of the SCR (selective catalytic reduction system), which plays a vital role in the reduction of NOx emissions.

Off-Highway and all Terrain Vehicles

In recent years Hamlin sensors have found a home in off the highway vehicle market.  They are being used to fulfill a wide range of functions including speed sensing, operator seat occupancy detection, hydraulic lift position, pedal position, handbrake position sensing.

Seat Track Position Sensors

Part of the occupant classification system, the Hamlin Seat Track Position Sensor is used to determine the position of the driver and passenger seat relative to the vehicle airbag.  Information from this and other sensors is used to determine the level of airbag deployment.

Seatbelt Buckle Sensor

Hamlin seat belt sensors using reed, Hall effect and micro-switch technologies are used to indicate if a vehicle occupant has fastened their seatbelt.  This information is used to control the activation of the passenger airbag.  It can also be used to trigger an audio/visual warning in the event that a seat is occupied and the belt has not been fastened.

Seatbelt Tension Sensor

Tension sensors are used to help classify the type of occupant in a vehicle seat.  They can be used to determine if the passenger seat is occupied by a child seat secured with a tightly cinched belt or person occupying the seat.  The result can be used to enable or disable the passenger airbag as required.

Consumer

Adaptive Lighting Systems

Hamlin sensors are used to control the position of front lights in adaptive lighting systems that have the ability to change their position laterally based on steering inputs to enhance the driver’s field of view around bends in the road.

Exercise Equipment

Hamlin sensing technology is widely used in applications within this market sector for speed sensing or rep. counting.  Every piece of exercise equipment that electronically monitors and feeds back the athletic performance of the user needs a sensor.  Hamlin sensors can measure the speed of the exercise bike or treadmill or measure the stroke rate of the rowing machine.

Heat on Demand (Combination) Boilers

Hamlin flow sensors are used in domestic heating systems to monitor water flow in the hot water side of the boiler.  When a hot water tap is switched on the sensor detects flow which acts as a signal for boiler ignition.

Household Domestic Appliances

Hamlin sensing technologies can be found across the range of household domestic appliances.  High-end vacuum cleaners use our sensors to detect if particular tools have been fitted.  Our sensors can be used for door safety sensors as well as liquid level detection in dishwashers and washing machines.

Pressurized Water Systems and Power Showers

In countries where water mains pressure is relatively low, the UK is a good example, pumps can be used to pressurize the whole or part of the domestic water system.  An example of this is the power shower.  A Hamlin sensor is used to detect the start of water flow when the shower valve is opened.  This activates the booster pump delivering an excellent high-pressure shower.

Industrial

Fuel Level Sensing

Hamlin sensors are found in fuel storage and truck diesel tanks where they have performed reliably for many years.  A ladder network of switching contacts provides multiple level sensing operated by a magnet embedded in a float.

Other

HVAC

Hamlin level sensors are used for monitoring the water level in air-conditioning condensate tanks.

Industrial and Domestic Utility Metering for Water and Gas

Hamlin sensors are commonly used in these applications where they perform the function of electrically measuring consumption.  Reed switch technology is highly suited to these applications as the hermetically sealed switching contacts can operate reliably for decades in harsh conditions.  Zero power operation compliments the use of battery powered data transmission.

Office Equipment

Hamlin sensors have found numerous applications in the office environment.  They perform a wide variety of functions such as cover interlocks and paper-path sensing.  They can be commonly found in copiers, printers and mail room products.

Security Products

Hamlin magnetic sensors, switches and reed relays can be found in leading brands of security equipment.  Reed switch technology is ideal for this application as it requires no power to operate, yet is capable of load switching, is practically inaudible and can be made small enough to be discretely hidden in door and window frame assemblies.
